JGP was selected to conduct the ESIA for the Rehabilitation / Expansion of Contador Hydropower Plant in Sao Tomé e Principe (December 2018)

As part of the Power Sector Recovery Project, funded jointly by the International Development Association (IDA) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) through parallel co-financing, the Government of the Democratic Republic of São Tome and Principe is developing the technical feasibility studies regarding the rehabilitation and potential expansion of Contador Hydropower Plant.

This plant was built in the 60s and has been in operation for about 50 years. Due to the lack of adequate maintenance over the last decades, it is currently operating at half of its installed power capacity (4 MW). It is located in the area of Obô National Park, which is considered one of the most important conservation areas in Africa due to ist Biological richness and diversity. The high conservation value of the project area, combined with its pronounced erosion problems and slope instability, stand as significant challenges for the project development and execution and management of its potential environmental and social impacts.

JGP was selected to develop the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), including an Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP), for this rehabilitation/potential expansion project, in accordance with all applicable requirements under STP environmental regulation, particularly regarding environmental licensing, and the World Bank operational policies and safeguards, especially the OP 4.01 on Environmental Assessment and OP 4.04 on Natural Habitats.
